Beech (Fagus Sylvatica)

One of the most majestic of our native trees, the beech can become very large with its low branched habit and beautiful spreading canopy of dense leaves. Few trees can surpass its rich copper autumn foliage. This tree thrives just about anywhere other than exposed coastal locations.

It does well in most reasonably fertile well drained soils except heavy clay or light sand. Now sadly the beech is growing more rarely, due to the effects of global warming and also due to the historic cutting down of beech woods for charcoal burners, iron foundries and glass works.
